The "Fame" star may have learned a lot from his street tough background, but now the actor, who has a good shot at being the break out of the flick, may prove himself to be a threat to his Hollywood competition. Vital Stats: The 25-year-old Brooklyn native didn't always have it easy. Growing up in Brooklyn he lived in several foster homes before moving away at 15 to make it in Hollywood. Now, his nickname is aptly "Hollywood."
Where you might have already seen him: He's made various cameos on various TV shows like "Without a Trace" and "Law & Order," but you may also recognize him from flicks like "Prom Night" and "Half Nelson," starring Canada Day babe Ryan Gosling. But, he's definitely yet to find a role that will make him a star, which is why he embraced his character so much in "Fame."
"I really had to struggle and fight my way in [to this business], so I really relate to Malik in that way," Collins told MTV News. "This business is never easy. Pursuing singing, dancing or acting, sometimes you get told you're not going to make it, sometimes it's rough. And you don't get to see that a lot on TV or in movies."
Why you should take notice of him now: Collins, who plays actor/rapper Malik in the reimagining of the classic, not only stars in the film but also wrote a rap for it (catch his vocal stylings in the "Fame" music video). He's proving that he's got skills in multiple areas. And, he's hoping that when fans go out to check out the flick they'll notice the fresh way that they tackled the film. "Basically, this is a modernization; it's a reinvention of the original," he said. "It's modern and fresh and fun for today."
